Luxurious day in the sun

We've had a lovely, luxurious day in the sun today - started out at the College of the Desert street fair - open every Saturday and Sunday in the parking lot of the College. Shuttle buses bring you from parking lots far away on the campus and once there, the hundreds of people have room to spread out. Everything imagineable is for sale from flip flops and T-shirts - 3 for $10.00, to garden art, thousands of hats, golf clubs and bags, and clothing and jewellery. Farmers market booths sell the usual - it is strawberry and asparagus time but avacado and artichokes are plentiful with dates, apricots and pastel-coloured licorice displayed in colourful rows.
There are also food stalls and by noon, the smell of hot dogs, hamburgers and Mexican fried treats attracted us. We sat at tables with four snowbirds talking about when they were going home (not until the weather looks better...) and listened to a Latin American band while eating our lunch and sipping fresh lemonade.
This afternoon we sat at home, immersed in our books, before eventually grabbing our beach towels and suits and heading to the pool for an hour's blazing sun. There is a warm wind blowing again today but it cooled us off as we baked. The wind blowing through the date palms sounds like a heavy rain shower - the first night I heard it, I expected to get up to pools of water everywhere. There is no sign of rain - the clouds retreated in the night to hug the mountains.

  1. Well we certainly saw some signs, nay, felt and heard some signs of heavy BC rain fall as we waited in line at the ferries, and disembarked at Otter Bay on Pender. Spent some good time looking through local galleries at novice, then great, local painting and glasswork.
We happened upon the Easter day Art Walk on South Pender, and were welcomed into two lovely local artist's studios with wine and very warm smiles and conversation. Some beautiful stuff: painting, folk sculptures, jewelery, glass work, sewn dolls and cards.
We took the afternoon ferry from Pender to Saltspring, and had yummy lunch and more walking around there. The day turned a little lighter as we waited for the evening ferry from Saltspring back to the big island.
A highlight was watching a friendly foreign man not only open the door to the vehicle, but politely ignore us as we yelled "No, no, that's not your car!" from the dock we were standing on. He finally got it as he looked in the vehicle and recognized that nothing in there belonged to him! He had probably rented his car, and couldn't tell it apart from the silver car we were driving. It gave us much delight to watch him almost get in and drive away in Christie and Stu's car!
Back home now, well your home :-) and throwing the ball for Knuck as he spent most of his day inside the car avoiding the rain.
A pleasant Easter day exploring the Gulf Islands for us, wishing you a great Easter down South.

  2. Hallo there!
thanks so much for all your blogging! Your descriptions are fabulous - it's so nice to be able to check in and find out what you are up to. Sounds like you're getting into the rythym down there...
The weather is still pretty crapy up here but we had a fantastic time on our island tour ;) You would have been so proud of us - we got up in time to catch the 9:30 ferry voluntarily! And we made it!
happy easter! love christie & stu too xo

  3. So nice to hear from you both. Your day sounded terrific. What luck to land on Pender the day of an Art Walk! Sorry about the weather - certainly no rain here and in fact even higher temperatures predicted. We are working hard to get as much sun as we can without coming home parboiled.
    See you soon,
    Love E/M
